In 2009, American scientist Adrian Helmsley travels to India to meet his friend Satnam, who has discovered that neutrinos from a massive solar flare have penetrated the Earth and are causing the temperature of its core to increase rapidly. Adrian returns to Washington D.C. to inform White House Chief of Staff Carl Anheuser and US President Thomas Wilson that this will instigate a chain of events that will bring about the end of the world. At the 36th G8 summit in 2010, other heads of state and heads of government are made aware of the situation. They collaborate to begin a secret project intended to ensure the continuity of human life, strategically choosing 400,000 people for admission on a series of gigantic arks to be constructed in the Himalayas. To help fund the venture, additional individuals are allowed to purchase tickets for one billion euros apiece.

In the early 1990s, a tractor mechanic from a northen countryside in China nicknamed Steelhead (Jackie Chan), enters Japan illegally in search of his fiancée, Xiu Xiu (Xu Jinglei). Steelhead and a bunch of other illegal immigrants came by a freighter that incidentally sunk before reaching the harbor. A local Japanese policeman discovered them and all the immigrants ran for their lives. Steelhead managed to steal some dry clothes and tracked down his brother Jie (Daniel Wu) for help. Jie helped provide food and shelter for Steelhead while looking for a job in between searching for Xiu Xiu. Jie introduced fellow Chinese immigrants and each of them helped Steelhead by showing him trades of the underworld to survive and make a living.

Two astronauts, Bower (Foster) and Payton (Quaid), wake up from suspended animation to find themselves alone, with no memory of who they are, what they are doing, or what has happened to the crew of their 60,000 passenger sleeper ship the Elysium. They are unable to access the ship’s bridge, and cannot communicate with any other members of the crew, including the flight team they are to relieve. While exploring the spacecraft under Payton’s radio guidance, Bower talks with Payton about Pandorum, a psychological condition brought on by extended periods of hyper-sleep (suspended animation) and its symptoms and effects, including severe paranoia, vivid hallucinations, and homicidal tendencies.
